Cambodia (former Kampuchea) comes from the once powerful Hindu & Buddhist Khmer Empire. The Khmer Empire stretched over most of the Indochinese Peninsula around 1000-1300 AD. The Khmer Empire was a powerful empire until 1400 AD. The Capital of the Khmer Empire was Angkor where the temples still stand today! Angkor Wat is at present the most famous temple in the Angkor area. The Thai sacked Angkor in the year 1432 and it was since then abandoned. King Norodom who got installed by Thailand in 1863 signed a treaty with France and as a result the Battambang and Siem Reap later became Cambodian again, after a border treaty between France and Thailand. Cambodia gained independence from France Nov 9 1953.
